| dc.description.abstract (摘要) | This article advances the material-semiotic approach in relation to practice theory in the sociology of consumption through an ethnographic study of the Living Food Diet in Taiwan. Originally promoted as dietary therapy for cancer patients, the Living Food Diet has become one of the most influential forms of healthy eating in Taiwan since the 1990s, reflecting both the rise of chronic diseases and the growth of alternative food networks such as organic farming and local food movements. Building on Evans’ material-semiotic approach, the article introduces materialities in context as an operational concept to analyse how food becomes curative through everyday practices of provisioning. The study draws on participant observation and interviews in five institutions that promote the Living Food Diet through cooking classes and related activities. The analysis identifies three dimensions of food provisioning that exemplify materialities in context: sourcing food materials; cooking a healthy diet; and connecting food and the body. The first examines how certain plants or processed foods are rendered viable components in Living Food Diet practices. The second shows how cooking activities constitute materialities of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ substances. The third explores how different medical systems are brought together through the materialised connection between food parts and bodily functions. By developing the concept of materialities in context, the article offers methodological insights into how the curative potential of diet is enacted in practice and extends the analytical scope of the material-semiotic approach within the sociology of consumption. | |
