Crowdfunding and Entrepreneurial Strategy

Resource acquisition is a primary challenge for early-stage ventures. Early-stage ventures typically have limited access to capital, material, and labor markets, which supplement the start-up value creation of an organization. Stinchcombe (1965) argued that liabilities of newness inhere in special difficulties that young firms face in acquitting resources of wealth, power, and legitimacy. Legitimacy for a new organization is limited because it has no “track record” of success and has had no time to establish reliable exchange relationships (Hannan and Freeman, 1984). Lack of resources restricts the amount of power that an organization can exercise over markets and competitive conditions. Most entrepreneurs would start to seek resources from their family, friends, and fools at their very initial stage. Other professional supporting organizations including financial institutions and venture capitalists would also help entrepreneurs to survive in the early stage and luckily succeed in the near future. Entrepreneurs can also obtain resources by establishing network ties (Gulati, 1995; Ahuja, 2000a). Their new network tie formation is heavily influenced by an organization’s network of past ties, or through strategic actions to establish network ties (Gulati, 1995; Hallen and Eisenhardt, 2012). The increasing attention has been paid to crowdfunding which is facilitated by Internet platforms through the participation of a large crowd, where total strangers can provide money to novel projects or even invest in early-stage entrepreneurial firms regardless of geography limitation. (Mollick, 2014; Belleflamme, Lambert, and Schwienbacher, 2013, 2014). However, the motivations and mechanisms of successfully fundraising remain vague. Particularly, how to use the crowdfunding platform to acquire their needed resources and achieve their strategic goal becomes an important issue for those entrepreneurs in the early stage. Therefore, this multiple-year research project attempts to explore how the characteristics of crowdfunding projects affect the success of fundraising by answering the following three major research questions: (1) What are the key characteristics of crowdfunding projects affecting the fundraising success? (2) What mechanisms motivate people to invest crowdfunding projects? (3) Why do new ventures choose to raise funds on crowdfunding platforms? What are their strategic goals in terms of resource acquisitions in different stages of new ventures? (Hallen and Eisenhardt, 2012; Sullivan and Ford, 2014)。 是否會影響團隊的知名度以利於未來的資源獲取? dc.description.abstract (摘要) Resource acquisition is a primary challenge for early-stage ventures.
