| dc.description.abstract (摘要) | 零售經理人有著許多動機來維持高存貨水平以改善產品可得性與服務水準，另一方面，「精實零售」哲學建議零售商應減少額外庫存，此精實哲學也反映在十數年來的零售產業庫存水平下降趨勢。然而存貨精實並不等同於有效率的零售業營運，零售業的存貨與績效更被預期存在著非線性的關係，晚近的存貨精實發展是否確切幫助零售商改善作業效率仍是待回答的問題。雖然作業效率是零售業者是否能在現今高度競爭市場續活的關鍵，關於零售存貨管理的傳統模型分析與近代實證研究在零售商作業效率上的瞭解仍十分有限，針對此一缺口，本研究蒐集2000 至2013 年間一大樣本的美國上市零售商追蹤資料，利用個體經濟生產理論來檢視「存貨精實」與「作業效率」的關係。就衡量各公司的存貨生產力而言，本研究採用的「存貨精實指標」較傳統的存貨周轉率更為全面，並額外考慮規模經濟與各業態自有的存貨銷售關係。透過一個考慮個體異質性與時間效果的隨機前沿分析，本研究試圖瞭解零售商在存貨控制更為精實的情況下，是否會更偏離或靠近營運績效前沿？我們並預期進行一連串的堅實性檢查與模型規範測試，以確保實證分析的結果效度。 | |
| dc.description.abstract (摘要) | Retail managers possess many incentives to hold large inventory positions to improve product availability and service, yet lean retailing philosophies suggest retailers should reduce excess inventories. The lean philosophy is manifested in long-term retailing industry patterns showing decreasing retailer inventories across recent decades. However, inventory leanness clearly is not synonymous with efficient retail operations, and a non-linear relationship between inventory and performance is expected for the retail sector. Whether these lean inventory developments help to improve retailer operating efficiency is an open question. While operating efficiency is crucial for firms to survive in this highly competitive modern retailing marketplace, operating efficiency is an important yet missing aspect in classical modeling work as well as in empirical work on retail inventory management. To fill in the gap, we capitalize on the microeconomic theory of production to empirically assess the association between inventory leanness and operating efficiency for a large sample of public U.S. retailers between 2000 and 2013. When it comes to measuring firms’ inventory productivity, inventory leanness improves upon inventory turnover by taking into account economies of scale and industry-specific inventory-sales relationships. Performing a stochastic frontier analysis that accounts for individual heterogeneity and time effects, we aim to understand whether becoming leaner in inventories makes retailers deviate from (i.e., worse off) or move toward (i.e., better off) the performance frontier. Finally, we plan to conduct a series of robustness checks and model specification tests to establish the validity of empirical findings. | |
