RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) offers a very efficient and feasible way to identify different items automatically, enabling many firms to collect the item-level information. Moreover, since the passive RFID tag is very affordable and able to function without any battery support, there is already a variety of management information systems based on RFID, such as those for supporting retail management, inventory management, and supply chain management and in the near future, RFID system will continue to influence the further development of IoT (Internet of Things). However, since many items and tags could be separated accidentally or unexpectedly, resulting in considerable RFID identification and security problems, one main goals of this study is to raise awareness of the problem of losing identification due to the unexpected removal of RFID tag. For example, almost of all of the existing RFID authentication, grouping/yoking, ownership transferring, and even proximity-checking solutions would not be working, once the tag is being separated from the item. This is because these existing means were only concerned with the situations in laboratory where a tag and the tagged item are assumed to be always together. This study is one of the very few research work that attempts to address such an issue. The main motivation of this study is to improve RFID identification and security by designing and developing an informational solution for detecting the unexpected removal of RFID tag. This study is an important first step in a direction of modeling the reality (i.e. from an IS perspective instead of a mechanical perspective) and able to be complementary with considerable prior related studies. Specifically, this study focuses on proposing an informational means by using ambient conditions information to address this problem. In before, several seemingly-related mechanical solutions have been proposed, such as EAS (electronic article surveillance) system or Ink-tag system, but they are mainly for preventing from shoplifting, rather than detecting the separation of a tag from an item. Recently, US NASA in 2017 also proposes a mechanical solution based on several mechanical devices for checking if a tagged bolt is torqued well, but it is neither suitable for collecting the item-level information nor concerned with any with system information security issues.
