| dc.description.abstract (摘要) | This essay explores the reception of Jane Austen in Taiwan from 1949, when the Chinese civil war nominally ended, to 2018, when Taiwan held a referendum on legalizing same-sex marriage. It comprises three parts. The first section examines how literary critics in the 1950s and the 1970s discussed Austen’s romantic plot. It shows how T. C. Hsia, an eminent scholar of modern Chinese literature, drew on Austen to assert the value of traditional Chinese love life. It also shows how another literary critic, Fu Shu-xian, extrapolated from Pride and Prejudice an antidote to excessive literary sentimentalism. The second section scrutinizes the intersection of Austen and identity politics in Taiwan in the mid-1990s. Analyzing Hsieh Yau-ling’s essay on Persuasion and Ang Lee’s comments on his film Sense and Sensibility (1995), I demonstrate the power of Austen’s love story to uncover cultural affinity that transcends political differences. The third section focuses on a recent Chinese edition of Mansfield Park published in a Taiwan divided by the controversy of same-sex marriage. The controversy found expression in how this edition of Mansfield Park was advertised. This essay proves that Austen’s novels enable post-1949 Taiwanese to evaluate the Chinese doctrine of regulated love. | - |
