| dc.description.abstract (摘要) | Narratives that come in various forms, functions, contexts and purposes have been studied from different disciplines ranging from humanities to social sciences. Hakka stories in a narrative mode of discourse represent a collection of shared values, beliefs, and cultural perspectives of Hakka ethnic groups. In the extant literature of Hakka stories, some researches do field work collecting stories told by informants of different dialects, some describe the contents of stories for categorization of stories into different types, and still some link the contents of stories to Hakka cultural elements. However, more systematic and rigorous research methodology and more in-depth research issues are missing. To fill the gaps, this project aims to analyze the 508 Hakka stories in the Hakka Corpus. With both quantitative and qualitative approaches, this study not only incorporates methods of both corpus linguistics and discourse analysis but also employs text-analysis tools, integrating both form-content and holistic-categorical analyses. This three-year project is organized as follows. First, with a bottom-up approach, each story is analyzed in terms of its story structure and its linguistic devices so as to come up with the story schemata of all the sub-types of the stories. Then computational tools will be employed for identifying relevant lexical triggers of certain topics. Evoked event ICMs, metaphor and metonymy ICMs, among others, are identified so as to generalize the themes and associated purposes. The correlation between story schemata and themes and purposes will be examined. Next, the knowledge schemata based on the results of the first two years are to be interpreted in terms of Hakka cultural constraints and filters, teasing out generic cultural values and specific ones. The study has both theoretical and empirical contributions. The findings, with quantitative and qualitative results, demonstrate an integration of content-form and holistic-categorical analyses for narrative studies. The methodology also illustrates a research model for the paradigm of Hakka studies. And most importantly, the study brings the dimension of cultural perspectives in narrative studies to the fore. | |
