The proposed study aims to investigate interlanguage pragmatic development of Chinese ESL and EFL learners’ ‘disagreement responses’, ‘responses to indirect complaints’, and ‘compliment responses’ in naturally occurring context, because these three kinds of response behavior are much used, yet intricate speech acts that often pose great difficulty for second language (L2) learners. Research into the performance of these speech acts has shown not only that these three speech acts involve a complex relationship between linguistic forms, meanings, and pragmatic prerequisites, but also that for each of them, high social stakes shape speakers’ behavior, thus permitting a variety of linguistic forms and strategies. However, rarely have the developmental processes of these speech acts been studied in interlanguage pragmatics. To achieve the above aim, this study is to focus not only on whether there would be differences in Chinese ESL and EFL learners’ developmental patterns of ‘disagreement responses’, ‘responses to indirect complaints’, and ‘compliment responses’, but on the sociocultural and psychological factors that may contribute to their possible difficulty in their L2 developmental processes of these three response behaviors. The proposed study will mainly use a design paradigm to generate data through eliciting responses to disagreements, indirect complaints, and compliments under conditions in which the participants will not be aware that the object of study is their conversational contribution. In other words, the corpus of data will be collected in contexts that are controlled from the investigator’s perspective, but spontaneous and natural from the participants’ perspective. The data gathered will, thus, be representative of the types of responses that naturally take place in everyday occurrence. To the best of the investigator’s knowledge, very little research in interlanguage studies thus far has tried to collect data this way. It is hoped that the way data will be collected in this study may contribute to the concern about the appropriateness of data collection method in this field. It is also hoped that the findings of this study can shed some light on both the learning process of speech acts and the universality issues. Most of the research foci of this proposed project are rarely or even have never been explored in the existing literature of interlanguage pragmatics. Accordingly, this study is designed to extend the scope of interlanguage pragmatics studies and could hence contribute significantly to this field.
