The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged), premiered in 1987, is a comedy co-written and performed by Adam Long, Daniel Singer, and Jess Winfield. Claiming that it finishes all the 37 plays by William Shakespeare in 97 minutes, this hilarious comedy has garnered numerous high acclaim because three playwrights/actors succeed in shrinking the Bard in a ludicrously fast-food but wittily entertaining way, as implicated in the name of their troupe—Reduced Shakespeare Company (also known as “RSC” like Royal Shakespeare Company). This project intends to examine how RSC in The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) parodies the quintessential parts of the Bard’s oeuvres seemingly at their expense while paying homage to the master, reinventing Shakespeare by imitating Shakespeare. Many writers, actors, and film-makers in the past 450 years have reproduced, reinterpreted, adapted, and appropriated Shakespeare’s plays, making the Bard the cultural capital in the whole world. However, the Shakespearean scholar Gary Taylor argues Shakespeare is shrinking behind this glamorous Bardolatry because Shakespeare’s stage plays are not good box office (197-205). Therefore, I would like to explore in this project how RSC’s comedy can maintain their good box office through the perspectives of appropriation and adaptation, parody, and comedy by employing adaptation and parody theories of Linda Hutcheon, and comedy theories of Mikhail M. Bakhtin and John Morreall. Strictly speaking, among the 37 plays by Shakespeare, RSC only selects 7 plays (Romeo and Juliet, Titus Andronicus, Othello, Macbeth, Julius Caesar, Troilus and Cressida, and Hamlet) for brief performances, retells the story of the “one” comedy by combining the Bard’s 16 comedies of similar plots (Twelfth Night, Comedy of Errors, As You Like It, All’s Well That Ends Well, Measure for Measure, Two Gentlemen from Verona, and A Mid-Summer Night’s Dream, etc.), and enacts 7 history plays (Richard II, King John, Henry VI, “King Lear,” Henry IV, Richard III, and Henry VIII) in the form of football game. Nevertheless, this “abridged” way of the adaptation of the approximately 30 plays not only conforms to the fast-food viewing habit of modern audience, but it also encapsulates some beauty of Shakespeare’s language and profundity of Shakespeare’s wisdom. In addition, RSC offends the Bard by parodying and praising him. The magic of the popularity of The Complete Works lies in comedy. Laughter ameliorates their impiety and offense, and retrieves how the Bard entertained his audience with crude humor and absurdity 450 hundred years ago. The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) might have consumed Shakespeare through parody, but its creative comedy perhaps can offer another new viewpoint to acknowledge the genius of Shakespeare.
