| dc.description.abstract (摘要) | 此計畫以日本畫家石田徹也(1973-2005)的畫作為個案，試圖闡明痛楚營染(sentimental pain)的結構與策略以扭轉自康德以降的理性霸權，此霸權將感傷(sentimentality)貶抑為自我放縱，因此需與道德及藝術脫鉤。石田徹也深受卡夫卡以及美國社會主義畫家班尚(Ben Shahn)的影響，立志以畫筆拯救世界，其作品以感傷氛圍著稱，已在日本各地以及倫敦、首爾、香港、舊金山與威尼斯等都會展出。石田徹也擅長以詭態身體作為隱喻批判日本社會裡的情感疏離與制度暴力。他將面帶憂鬱的自畫像(身分通常是上班族或中學生)與鏽蝕的機器(如堆高機)或日常生活物品(如輪胎、捆包貨物或學校建築)合為一體，來象徵自我在現代生活中不斷被外在的粗暴他者攻擊，藉以激起觀者的集體痛楚與社會共感(social sympathy)。在此計畫中，我試圖結合啟蒙時代的感傷主義、詭態概念與痛感論述成為一情感的倫理學，藉此闡述石田徹也作品中的療癒與道德面向並且重新連結感傷藝術與道德間的關係。 | |
| dc.description.abstract (摘要) | The project seeks to elucidate the structures and strategies of sentimental pain and thereby destigmatise sentimentality, the appeal to the tender feelings which since Kant has been dismissed as self-indulgent and thus dissociated from morality and art. In so doing, the project employs as a case study the paintings of Tetsuya Ishida (石田徹也) (1973-2005), a Japanese painter whose works of sentimental nature have been exhibited (via group and solo shows) throughout Japan and in global cities such as London, Seoul, Hong Kong, San Francisco, and Venice and who, influenced by Franz Kafka (1883-1924) and Ben Shahn (1898-1969), sought to save the world with a brushstroke. Typical of his paintings is the grotesque fusion of a distressed self-portraiture (as a salaryman or a secondary school student) with machines such as forklift trucks or everyday objects such as tyres, cargos, and school buildings, a fusion that symbolises the attack of the brutal other on individuals and that is invested with heightened feelings of sadness with an aim to cultivate the viewer’s sympathetic concern for the “collective sickness of today’s Japanese society,” or indeed, of modern urban society in general.With this in mind, I aim to weave the threads of Enlightenment sentimentalism, the grotesque, and the language of pain into an ethics of emotion to shed light on the therapeutical and ethical sides of Ishida’s paintings and, more broadly, to reinstate the link between sentimental art and morality. | |
