| dc.description.abstract (摘要) | 本計畫探索十八世紀末至十九世紀中期英國女性小說家如何書寫情感、記憶與距離間的對話。筆者對「在遠方的愛」一詞有兩層定義。其一，它指的是人際間的疏離與冷漠。其二，它指的是若有似無的情感。筆者以為浪漫女性小說家不僅了解這兩層意思，更再再地扣問: 英國的社會、文化與歷史如何塑造「在遠方的愛」?當情感只能停留在記憶的彼端，英國人民如何面對與自處? 筆者計畫研究三個不同的歷史氛圍，三群不同的女性小說家，來仔細回答這些問題。本計畫第一部分探究1790年代女性小說家以及其作品中揮之不去的冷漠(remembered indifference)。學界咸認為這群女權運動作家筆下的情感多為激進卻不實用的社會批判。筆者認為從記憶與冷漠的角度出發，我們可以更精確地了解她們對情感的寄託與關懷。第二部分探討為何記憶和情感的交織在瑪萊雅‧愛芝渥絲(Maria Edgeworth)的小說中扮演重要的地位，以及愛氏如何用此連結傳達她對教育的重視以及國家認同的渴望。第三部分研究伯朗蒂三姊妹(the Brontë sisters) 小說中介於遺忘與懷念間的情感。筆者將重新思考為何伯朗蒂三姊妹，尤其是安‧伯朗蒂(Anne Brontë)，

| dc.description.abstract (摘要) | This research project examines representative English women novelists during the period 1790-1850 and their creative engagement with the issue of “love at a distance.” This issue first refers to the failure of sympathetic communication. It also indicates the interplay between present and absent feelings. Both definitions help to trace the genealogy of Romantic women novelists from the late eighteenth-century to the mid-nineteenth century. Together they introduce a number of questions: what is the relationship between love and distance? Why is it that women novelists in this period obsessively discuss this relationship in terms of remembrance or forgetting? In what ways does this obsession give cultural resonances to memory? I plan to answer these questions in three stages.
The first part of my research project explores women novelists in the 1790s. Protesting against an unjust patriarchal society indifferent to women’s difficulties, these women novelists are usually described as radical feminists, their arguments dismissed as part of an effete eighteenth-century sentimentalism. But this view stands because literary historians have overlooked how complex the representations of remembered indifference are in the works of these women writers. I would like to examine the various ways through which they use the drama of memory to pioneer a fresh understanding of social interactions.
The second part of my research project concentrates on Maria Edgeworth, an influential Romantic novelist famous for her Irish national tales and English novels of manners. These two disparate literary forms, I argue, in fact are united by a shared concern with nourishing fond memory and regulating unpleasant ones. I propose to investigate how this concern embodies historical forces shaping perceptions of distant lands, how it challenges conventional disapproval of didacticism, and how it manifests itself textually in Edgeworth’s novels. These approaches will illustrate how personal memory acquires social significance in the Romantic age and explain why the weight of memory is particularly controversial for Edgeworth.
The third part revolves around the Brontë sisters and their understanding of the working of memory. I would like to explore the possibility that the Brontë sisters generally, Anne Brontë in particular, do not privilege indelible love defying time and death, as most Brontë readers would have us believe. Instead, they celebrate affections inhabiting the liminal space between forgetfulness and remembrance, affections that are both tantalizingly close at hand

and frustratingly beyond reach. I plan to analyze how this form of affection interacts with memory in Anne Brontë’s Agnes Grey and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. My research aims at answering two questions: In what ways are the Brontës sisters’ representations of memory (un-)Romantic? Why is it that Anne has long been marginalized in the Brontë scholarship? | |
