| dc.description.abstract (摘要) | 本研究計畫檢視伯朗特三姊妹小說中對聲音的呈現，並探索為何這三位重要的十九世紀英國小說家鍥而不捨地將聽覺的經驗融入她們的作品當中。本計畫分三大部分。第一部分討論耳朵在艾蜜莉‧伯朗特 (Emily Brontë)小說《咆嘯山莊》中的重要性。筆者預計先視耳朵為一個具體的聽覺器官，分析為何該器官在小說中是家庭暴力下的犧牲品。接著筆者希望研究小說中傾聽與竊聽的場景，探究耳朵的象徵意義。第二部分著重在安‧伯朗特(Anne Brontë)的兩本小說《安格妮絲‧格雷》與《懷德菲爾山莊的房客》中的噪音議題。安‧伯朗特常被評論家認為是一安靜的作家。筆者以為在此沉默外表的背後蘊藏著一個對噪音有獨特見解的靈魂。筆者希望能探索安‧伯朗特如何藉由噪音來思考性別與教育的議題。本計畫的最後一部分將再探學界對夏綠蒂‧伯朗特(Charlotte Brontë) 的小說《雪莉》是否為一工業小說(an industrial novel) 的爭辯。持肯定態度的學者認為該小說的核心是勞工階級以及他們對工業化社會的怨懟。持否定態度的學者認為這些議題僅是小說的背景。這樣的爭辯塑造了核心與邊緣的二元對立。筆者企圖證明小說中複雜的工人之聲(the sounds and voices of workers) 其實在訴說著核心與邊緣互相滲透的辯證關係。 | |
| dc.description.abstract (摘要) | This research project investigates the representation of sounds in the novels of the three Brontë sisters: Charlotte, Emily and Anne. It explores the possibilities that their fictional works are centrally concerned with registering, transmitting and recording various kinds of sounds. This project comprises three parts, each one focusing on one author. The first section examines the importance of ears in Emily Brontë’s novel Wuthering Heights (1847). Ears have both a literal and metaphorical presence in this novel. I plan to begin with analyzing this sense organ as a physical object capable of perceiving sounds and vulnerable to domestic violence. Then I will move on to discuss why the development of this novel relies so heavily on the experiences of listening and overhearing. The second stage of this project scrutinizes the problem of noise in Anne Brontë’s novels Agnes Grey (1847) and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (1848). Brontë scholars tend to regard Anne Brontë as a quiet woman writer who endures suffering patiently and who lacks her elder sisters’ passionate eloquence. I believe that her alleged quietness conceals her great interest in the production of noise. I would like to uncover her attitudes towards noise as they are figured in her novels. I also plan to discuss how the problem of noise can enrich traditional knowledge of gender and education in Anne Brontë’s novels. The final part of this project examines the role sounds play in Charlotte Brontë’s novel Shirley (1849). This novel is set in the years 1811-1812, when the Luddite riot reveals the disturbing impact of the Industrial Revolution on England. But whether this novel qualifies as an “industrial novel” is a question that sparks contrasting views. Scholars who delineate Shirley as an “industrial novel” finds it necessary to situate the working class and their discontent at the core of this novel, while those who disagree stress that these industrial elements represent at best a backdrop. I argue that the ways through which Charlotte Brontë dramatizes the sounds and voices of the working class can help us move beyond this simple opposition between the center and the margin. The complex sonic environment of Shirley in fact draws our attention to the dialectic between the central and the peripheral. This dialectic, I believe, promises more insight into the understanding of the working class in the 19th-century industrial novel generally, in Shirley in particular. | |
