| dc.description.abstract (摘要) | This research project investigates why water and its various forms play a formative role in the novels of the three Brontё sisters, Charles Dickens and Elizabeth Gaskell. This project comprises three sections. The first section examines how the three Brontё sisters draw on horticultural languages to formulate their drama of personal improvement. In Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, this drama intersects respectively with the overabundance, lack and movement of water. I plan to explore the possibility that the plot of individual growth in these three novels provides a platform on which horticulture and water can speak to each other. The second section of this project analyzes how, in Oliver Twist and Great Expectations, Dickens employs river imagery to articulate his attitude toward progress. Scholars interested in understanding Dickens's attitude toward progress tend to focus on the railway in his works and bypass another symbol of constant movement: the river. By scrutinizing how Dickens connects a river with the individual and social improvement of characters in the two chosen novels, I would like to find out what progress means for Dickens and what kind of progress Dickens (dis)approves of. I speculate that the river, with its continuous flow and tranquilizing power, best represents Dickens's response to the strengths and weaknesses of industrial England. The third section of this project examines Gaskell's representations of the sailor and the sea in Mary Barton and Sylvia's Lovers. On the face of it, with the former's vivid depictions of factory workers and the latter's narrative focus on a coastal town in Northern England, these two novels support the common consensus that Gaskell is an industrial and provincial novelist. By studying how the sea and its impact on human beings infiltrate these two novels, I plan to demonstrate that these two texts are more sophisticated than the labels of an industrial and a provincial novel can accommodate. By analyzing how sailors in these two texts traverse the land and the sea, literally and symbolically merging these two realms as they go along, I would like to uncover the extent to which Gaskell's maritime visions shape her concern for industrial/provincial England. | |
