摘要 Language processing, embedded within the broader cognitive architecture, is shaped by linguistic and individual cognitive factors, and likely involves both domain-specific and domain-general mechanisms. This talk discusses the impact of individuals’ socio-cognitive propensities on combinatorial meaning computation and language use. Our studies show that typically developing adults with lower socio-cognitive skills, as indexed by autistic-like traits, expend greater effort in processing underspecified meaning and are less likely to derive the intended interpretation. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) results indicate that this individual variability correlates primarily with activation in the pars triangularis of the left inferior frontal gyrus, while the computation of underspecified meaning generally recruits a frontoparietal network supporting deeper contextual meaning search. We suggest that individuals with higher autistic-like traits are less context-sensitive and more inclined toward deliberative reasoning. In addition, neural activation during language comprehension can be modulated by task demands through semantic control mechanisms. Together, the findings suggest that linguistic meaning computation reflects individual- and task-dependent variation alongside group-level commonalities. These empirical patterns have implications for linguistic theories and models of language processing.
