This project will investigate the role of deixis in realizing textual cohesion in different text genres in Bunun. More precisely, it will compare how the realization of cohesion is different for oral literature and Biblical narrative. The project will create an interlinearized corpus of oral narrative texts in various Bunun dialects and of Biblical texts, and analyze these texts in terms of textual cohesion, the semantic and discursive relations that weave the component sentences of a stretch of discourse together into a coherent text. The main focus in this project will be on the interaction between deictic elements, such as demonstrative pronouns, articles and anaphoric markers, and other referential expressions Textual cohesion is an indicator of intelligibility and genre differentiation. It can help us to better understand how the translation of Biblical text is leading to the creation of a new literary genre in the Austronesian language of Taiwan. It will also show how divergent this genre is from normal oral story telling events that occur in every-day life in the various dialects of Bunun, and to what extent these newly introduced texts are understood by the speakers of different dialects. This analysis will then be extended to two other indigenous languages of Taiwan, Paiwan and Atayal. As such, the outcomes will provide practical information to translators and authors that are aiming to produce literary materials in the Austronesian languages of Taiwan about how to create more intelligible texts to their varied readership. On a more theoretical level, the outcomes will give us a first insight into incipient genre differentiation in a minority language in Taiwan that previously did not have a written tradition. Since the concept of cohesion has not previously been applied to a Formosan language, this research will also provide a valuable contribution to general systemic-functional theory.
