| dc.description.abstract (摘要) | The project ‘A comparative study of place naming systems in Paiwan and Bunun’ will make a contribution to our knowledge of Indigenous naming systems in Taiwan and the Austronesian world, and to toponymy research in general in a number of ways. Firstly, while toponyms are of interest to etymologists, and have been recorded and discussed in historical and anthropological research, there is little systematic linguistic research on the status of toponyms in the Austronesian languages of Taiwan. This project will help to remedy this lacuna. More generally, this study will contribute to our knowledge of toponymy in a wider Austronesian context. Although the Austronesian linguistic community has had considerable interest in spatial reference, systematic research on toponyms has been scarce. This study will closely investigate the correlation between the linguistic and geographical aspects of the landscape in two Austronesian societies. Thirdly, the information generated by the project is of practical use to Indigenous policy efforts to reintroduce Indigenous place names. Finally, onomastic research on toponymy and studies on linguistic landscapes have so far largely focused on Western countries and urban contexts. The research here proposed will expand the comparative dataset in these two fields with information with two rural Indigenous communities in Taiwan. | |
