There is no dispute translator status has never received due attention or be given due importance, despite historical data show translators have significant impact on history. Pym (2008) suggests in Method in Translation History that part-time translators, while their roles are overlooked, are usually more influential than full-time ones, because in general they follow certain ideology and are at key positions. In addition, Pym insists on using the plural form of “translator” to emphasize translators’ individuality, for he thinks the singular form is an abstract concept referring to translators collectively. Competitions and collaborations between nations or ethnic groups can never happen without communication and interaction that require the use of language, so translators often play critical roles at such moments. For instance, Malinche tremendously contributed to the Spanish colonization of South and Central America. She acted as the interpreter for Hernán Cortés, the Spanish conquistador, and was also his advisor and lover. Invasion or annexation of other countries or ethnic groups is not likely to succeed with guns and bullets alone. Therefore, translators inevitably play a key part for the encounters due to the multiple positions and functions vested in them. History shall be linked together by more of the trivial fragments, and people and words never received much attention. It points out translators’ remarkable impact on written history and one of the reasons to use the plural of “translator” to imply their individuality. There are abundant historical materials discussing Dutch settlement in Taiwan during the period of Cheng Family’s rule. On the contrary, the compilation of the history about the Spanish 16-year colonial rule of Taiwan is still in process today. Although local historians such as José Eugenio Borao, Chen-chen Fang, Yu-chung Lee, and Jiayin Weng have researches looking into Mexican settlement in China, studies in the context of archeology, trade, archives, language, etc. can rarely be found. The vast subject field and endless data make the investigation very difficult. As a result, this study is inspired to put together the history of Spanish settlement in China from the perspective of translators. Translators play vital roles during the time but have never received attention equivalent to their importance. It is thus believed a study of translators during the time will uncover lots of hidden history.
