While Eugene Fromentin is famous as a painter of orientalist scenery, it is less noted that he is at the same time the author of several books, notably Dominique, published in 1863. A curious, complex, and ambivalent work, Dominique is in line with the 18th-century novels that name after their protagonists, but distinguishable from them at the same time. After an exemplary experience of a Romantic protagonist—hyper-sensible, solitary, tortured—the hero changes his life and is reborn as a spouse, a father, and a public figure, who wants to be “useful” to the society. But this metamorphose, with a successful appearance, however, still remains enigmatic. In this research project, entitled “Eugene Fromentin’s Dominique: A Chronology of Recuperation?” I propose to reflect upon the subtleties and the ambivalences of the seemingly simple story of Dominique. The main subject of my study is the love between Dominique and Madeleine—the prominently “Romantic,” passionate love of which the sober Dominique is supposed to “cure” himself. In my analysis, I will apply the theory of Denis de Rougemont (Love in the Western World), according to which, passionate love is like war and feeds on obstacles. Indeed, two semantic fields emerge clearly in the love story between Dominique and Madeleine: that of warrior fighting and that of a disease. But it is precisely these isotopes to warfare and this morbid aspect of Romantic passion that generate the history of this book and, more generally, all love stories, which mean literature. Dominique tells in great detail the chronology of his passion, but he remains curiously silent about the love that unites his wife. It is well known: the suffering in love brings about discourses, while happy romances do not have any story to tell ... Fromentin Eugene’s Dominique perfectly illustrates these two truths. dc.description.abstract (摘要) While Eugene Fromentin is famous as a painter of orientalist scenery, it is less noted that he is at the same time the author of several books, notably Dominique, published in 1863.
