| dc.description.abstract (摘要) | 近年多份大型的文獻探討均指出，縱使應用語言學者關心的是各種外語的學習，過去二十年來的外語學習動機研究卻幾乎都只以英語為標的，因而我們對外語學習動機至今的了解是偏頗、不完全的，若決策者或教育專家要以偏重英文的研究所知去制定其他外語的發展方向，將可能受到嚴重的誤導。此外，目前以英語為主的學習動機理論亦可能不足以解釋第二外語的動機，需要世界各地第二外語學習動機的實證資料匯集，協助加以修正。本計畫以一針對政治大學近二千名修習八種第二外語的學生之學習動機調查研究為先導，以匈牙利學者Zoltan Dörnyei 的 Second Language Motivational Self System (L2MSS) 為理論架構，探討台灣高中生與大學生修習第二外語的學習動機。研究問題循序有三：1) 台灣學生修習第二外語的初始動機及歷時變化樣貌為何？2)哪些因素塑造台灣學生第二外語的學習動機或造成他們動機的起伏？3)台灣本地動機特別強烈或高低變化特別懸殊的學習個案與國際上已報導的第二外語學習者個案有何異同？本計畫預計於三年期間採用混合研究法，以問卷調查與多元質性資料自學習者共同特性逐步聚焦深入特殊個案探討，期能貢獻外語教育的學術與教學實務發展。 | |
| dc.description.abstract (摘要) | A 2017 Modern Language Journal special issue pinpointed the imbalance of research effort between English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) and Languages other than English (LOTEs), specifically highlighting this phenomenon in language learning motivation. While the number of publications on language motivation accumulated rapidly over the past two decades, the majority concerned only on ELF, which resulted in a gap in our understanding of foreign language learning motivation in general and may be misleading when it comes to theorization and informing policy decisions. Empirical studies on LOTE motivation are therefore needed to redress the issue. This proposal is a follow-up to a previous survey study at National Chengchi University which investigated the motivation of college learners of eight different LOTEs. Framed under Dörnyei's Second Language Motivational Self System, the proposal aims to focus on the motivation of Taiwanese LOTE learners at both secondary and tertiary levels. The three specific research questions are: 1) What are Taiwanese students’ initial and developmental patterns of LOTE motivation? 2) What factors contribute to the formation and change of LOTE motivation? and 3) What are the characteristics of motivation cases found in Taiwan and how are they compared to other LOTE learners having been reported in international academic publications? The study will adopt a mix-methods approach in a three-year timeline and collect both quantitative and qualitative data to help answer the research questions. It is hoped that the results can contribute to the theory of foreign language motivation as well as the policy and pedagogy of LOTE education. | |
