| dc.description.abstract (摘要) | The fundamental issue addressed in this project is the “publish (in English) or perish” mandate scholars in Taiwan face and the recognition that multilingual academic writers tend to experience additional burden compared to Anglophone writers. The burden can derive from linguistic and/or material challenges, but it tends to appear in problematic manuscripts that editors reject “in house” without consulting outside reviewers or are eventually rejected after peer review in which referees are frustrated with inadequate manuscript revision. These decisions are consequential to scholars’ professional prospects and their success depends on their ability to respond to reviewer and editor feedback appropriately.
Editorial peer review is the core activity of academic publication and production, but at most journals, the scene behind the submission platform is hidden from authors and editors may not be aware of reasons behind authors’ responses and decisions. This gap contributes to misunderstandings and friction in the publishing process. Therefore, the purpose of this project is to gain a clearer understanding of how editors and authors make decisions regarding manuscripts at key points during the peer review process. Gathering text histories and conducting talk around text interviews with editor-author pairs for case studies of individual manuscript trajectories will allow editors to better understand authors’ challenges and authors to gain insight into editors’ concerns.
This project aims to contribute a critical pragmatic view of editorial peer review at journals published in Taiwan. It has implications for journals, higher education institutions, and government entities concerned with knowledge production in Taiwan. | |
