Typhoon Haitang in 2005 and Typhoon Morakot in 2009 damaged Taiwan severely, and have caused serious disasters for villages in the watershed of Taimali River, Taitung. The issue of building permanent settlements for the damaged households, and the issue of healing post-disaster trauma of the afflicted people, are still in the process of resolving. In order to understand the present-day situation of the damaged area, and the need of afflicted people, we have to understand the psychological need of the indigenous people living in the damaged area. This research plan, for two-years term, aims to study the traditional belief and customs and contemporary religious practices of Chia-lan Village, the most damaged village in the watershed of Taimali River during these two typhoons. This research will be conducted from the perspective of social and cultural anthropology, and the purpose is to understand the religious conceptions of different ethnic groups and their adaption to disasters. This research will contribute to the reduction of cultural distance between ethnic groups, and the research result can provide a discourse basis of disaster-prevention knowledge and policy of reconstruction for indigenous people in Eastern Taiwan. The research procedure is as follows: the researcher will start from the native point of view of indigenous traditional knowledge system, then move to the context of oral histories of indigenous people, in order to understand their interactions with living environment, and their cognition and reaction to natural disasters. Then the researcher will attempt to explore their contemporary religious practices and collect ethnographies of their adaption to disasters.
