In this two-year project, entitled “the Postmodern Tribes in Everyday Taipei,” we propose to fulfill two objectives. First, to fashion into a theoretical model that will help researchers identify the postmodern consumerist character of a group by means of a set of routine and special mechanisms that address the group’s key issues of identity, solidarity, and “fun.” And second, to argue, preliminarily, that this model is highly applicable to our three “tribes” in greater Taipei—a cuisine village, a ballet society, and an aboriginal tribe—whose postmodern tendencies can be thrown into relief both with the mechanisms specified and with the detailed information gathered in the fieldwork of the next two years.
