The purpose of this project is twofold. First, it is to engage the Chinese experience of the Taiwanese businesspersons in debates on the relationships between globalization and nationalism. And second, it is to clarify Taiwan’s policy toward Mainland China in regard to “three direct connections” and “refrainment from hasty westward movement.” In terms of the theoretical debate over whether or not globalization contributes to the demise of nationalism, we propose that taking Taiwanese businesspersons in China as a “diasporic community,” their stories of migration will help determine the existence of the relationship. Specifically, our in-depth interviews of the businesspersons are applied to test the model which suggests that class, defined as employer/employee relationship, influences individual national identity by means of both “diasporic” story-construction and the process of localization. In terms of the Mainland policy, we suggest that much depends on whether our working hypothesis is realized or not, a hypothesis which says that if one is under 45, being employed in China and going there with one’s family, then, whatever one’s origin is, one will undergo the process of localization in 3-5years and will identify oneself with China afterwards. - dc.description.abstract (摘要) The purpose of this project is twofold.
