Investigations in the past have mainly focused on how simple unitary categorical decisions are achieved during facial expression categorization. As a consequence, there are still critical gaps in the knowledge base that pertain to the extent to which contextual information modulates categorical processing. Our long-term goal is to contribute a better understanding of the categorical processes of facial expressions, especially how decisions are biased by various sources of contextual information. As the next step toward attainment of our long-term goal, the objective of the current application is to investigate the influence of sequential context on categorical judgements when briefly presented facial expressions are categorized in turn. Our central hypothesis is that previously presented facial expression guides decision making on the current one. To test our hypothesis, we will employ a combination of behavioural, MEG, and fMRI experiments. The rationale for this project is that the completion of the proposed studies will provide a new window to elucidate how temporal emotional information interacts in guiding categorical decisions and ultimately shaping our behaviour. Guided by strong preliminary data, the following specific aims will be pursued in this project: 1) Identify the mechanism responsible for the influence of sequential context; and 2) determine the neural association between the current and the preceding facial expression stimulus when categorical decisions are made in sequential context. Under the first aim, a behavioural approach will be adopted to explore the extent to which the dissimilarity between the current and the preceding facial expression stimulus provides a basis for making categorical decisions. Under the second aim, MEG and fMRI methods will be adopted to investigate the extent to which the neural responses evoked by the current facial expression vary according to different types of preceding facial expressions, and then how such interactions can be used to reliably predict behavioural decisions. The proposed research is innovative, because it capitalizes on how categorical decisions on facial expressions are achieved in sequential context, especially that the mechanism underlying such sequential decision making has been little addressed in the past. The proposed research is significant, because it does not only benefit emotion and decision-related research, but also advance the field of economics or other social sciences, in which sequential decision making plays an important part.
