Prior literature has mainly discussed over consumer\r\nevaluations of the co-branded products (e.g., the\r\nSony-Ericsson mobile), but the investigations with\r\nrespect to the intangible co-branded service (e.g.,\r\nKFC-A&W co-shared fast-food restaurant in U.S.) are\r\nrather scarce. The objective of this study is to\r\nbridge this gap.\r\nIn this research we investigate an important\r\nquestion: if a failure occurs in co-branding, why\r\ncould the customers have different magnitudes of\r\nnegative spillover effects across each of the\r\npartnering brands? We argue that, except different\r\nlevels of brand familiarity, the different thoughts\r\nof self-referencing and other-referencing might be\r\nthe answer to the question. We adapt the expectancyvalue\r\nmodel to validate two research propositions.\r\nThe first proposition applies the theory of selfreferencing\r\nto argue that the customers may become\r\nmore upset (i.e., the amplifying effect) when they\r\nfocus on their own needs; on the contrary, the\r\nsecond proposition applies the theory of other-referencing to posit that the buffering effect may\r\noccur if the customer thinks of the failure from the\r\nprovider's perspective. We claim that these\r\namplifying and buffering spillover effects may lead\r\nto a transfer of a magnified negative association\r\nfrom one brand to the other as well as a free-rider\r\neffect of forgiving in a partnership, respectively.\r\nThis research makes two distinct contributions to the\r\nresearch field of co-branding. First of all, to the\r\nauthor's knowledge, we are the first to use the\r\ntheory of self-referencing and other-referencing (cf.\r\nWan et al., 2011) to clarify the current conflicting\r\nfindings of the moderating impacts of brand\r\nfamiliarity on the spillover effects on the belief\r\nlevel. Secondly, in contrast to the belief updating\r\nmodels in co-branding field (cf. Lee and Decker,\r\n2009), our mathematical model offers an innovative\r\nway of explaining the mechanism of customers' belief\r\nupdating in a new scenario – service failures. For\r\nTaiwanese branding managers, by considering the\r\ntheory of other-referencing, we can address the\r\nimportance of altruism, and thus we may help to\r\nprovide a normative guideline of improving the\r\nseller-buyer relationship.
