In order to better understand how conspiracy theories are able to adapt and remain relevant even when the premises are changing, I investigate the narrative changes in the biolabs conspiracy theory between 2013 and 2022. The case study is composed by analyzing four articles that were published on alternative media at important moments for the conspiracy: the Lugar center inauguration, 2018 resurgence of the biolabs conspiracy and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Rhetoric analysis and social representation theory were used to identify and highlight the changes, or the lack thereof, in the evolution of the theory across the articles. While the analysis did not identify any substantial change at the narrative level, it was able to confirm previous findings about the loosely connected nature of conspiracy theory from reality, and highlight how the fact that the ultimate target of the conspiracy doesn’t change is enough to maintain the conspiracy believable even if other details may change.

zh_TW
dc.description.abstract (摘要) In order to better understand how conspiracy theories are able to adapt and remain relevant even when the premises are changing, I investigate the narrative changes in the biolabs conspiracy theory between 2013 and 2022. While the analysis did not identify any substantial change at the narrative level, it was able to confirm previous findings about the loosely connected nature of conspiracy theory from reality, and highlight how the fact that the ultimate target of the conspiracy doesn’t change is enough to maintain the conspiracy believable even if other details may change.en_US
