Despite the hostile cross-strait relations between Taiwan and China, Taiwan`s pop music has gained long-term popularity in China, which presents a question that merits further investigation. How do Chinese people perceive Taiwan`s pop in everyday life? How cross-strait media between Taiwan and China had used Taiwan`s pop as a mediation form of the `Imagined Communities` to negotiate with their own versions of political agendas and national identities, in some different historical phases of `Cold-war propaganda` (1949-), `Open-Up policy` (1978) and `lifting the ban on visiting families of China` (1987). To what extent does the fact that Taiwan and China hold and struggle with contested versions of political and national identities affect the way Chinese audiences listen to Taiwanese pop? The continued study seeks to understand the routes and paths of how Taiwan`s pop traveled to China: its mediation, production and political formation. Different from previous focus on musical audience and their cultural memories, this project highlights the significance of two media forms: Grassroots media and Radio broadcasting. As the former places their focus on using cassette piracy, personal network circulation, songs covering and other phenomena, the latter seeks to examine the case studies from two media organizations; respectively, Taiwan`s ‘Central Broadcasting System: Voice of Free China’ and China’s ‘Shanghai People’s Broadcast Radio.’ Moreover, as a supplement, it also examines the experiences and cultural memories of 24 Chinese audience members living in Beijing and Shanghai, who are fans of 1990s Taiwan`s pop. The research fields are set in Taipei, Beijing and Shanghai. This study aims to probe the spread of Taiwan pop music in China, especially the time from illegal passion to legitimacy in the 1980-1990s. The study shall highlight that the transmission of Taiwanese pop in China may be both mediated `into`, and `by`, the changing status quo of cultural-political relations between Taiwan and China, as well as by the changing face of China`s media and music industries, brought about by developments in the use of technology and by the demand for lifestyle trends.
