West Malaysia日期 2023 上傳時間 2-Aug-2023 14:25:06 (UTC+8) 摘要 本文認同陳琮淵博士對東馬華資銀行的發展的研究架構，並引用他的架構，以西馬華人銀行作為研究對象，從結合型社會資本和橋接型社會資本的角度，將討論時段分為三個時期：戰前英殖民地時期；戰後經濟恢復至新經濟政策；國家發展政策至21世紀初期，對馬來西亞華人銀行發展的影響因素進行分析。回答經過百餘年的發展，從匯兌莊等傳統金融機構發展到現在的華人銀行，馬來西亞華人銀行的發展過程中受到哪些因素在起著推動作用？ 本文指出，西馬華人銀行的發展經歷以下三個階段：一是战前英殖民地時期作為華人社會內部的結合型社會資本（1945年前），此時華人移民為了創業謀生而建立華人銀行等族裔金融機構，並依靠同族互助的精神；二是戰後的經濟恢復至新經濟政策作為華人社群內部與外部的結合型社會資本與橋接型社會資本（1945年至1990年），華資銀行在國家大力扶持土著資本下，為了生存進而發展政商關係，以維持控制權；三是新國家發展政策至21世紀初期作為華人社群與中國之間的橋接型社會資本（1991年-2010年），1998年起，華資銀行在政府推動國內銀行整併，僅剩大眾、豐隆兩家華人銀行在大合併中生存下來，並走向區域，選擇香港利用社會資本進軍中國大陸投資，以較少社會資本實現跨國經營。
This article agrees with Dr. Chen-Tsung Yuan`s research framework on the development of Chinese banks in East Malaysia and applies his framework to study of Ethnic Chinese banks in West Malaysia. The research will be conducted from the perspectives of bonding social capital and bridging social capital, which will be divided into three periods: the pre-war British colonial period, the post-war economic recovery to the era of the New Economic Policy and the National Development Policy up to the early 21st century. The objective of the article is to analyze the influencing factors on the development of Ethnic Chinese banks in Malaysia. The article will explore the driving factors behind the evolution of Ethnic Chinese banks in Malaysia over more than a century, transition from traditional financial institutions as remittance houses to modern Chinese banks. This article points out that the development of Ethnic Chinese banks in West Malaysia has gone through the three stages as following: Firstly, during the pre-war British colonial period (before 1945), these banks functioned as bonding social capital within the Chinese community. Chinese immigrants established these banks and other ethnic financial institutions for entrepreneurial and livelihood purposes, relying on the spirit of mutual assistance within their ethnic group. Secondly, during the post-war economic recovery until the era of the New Economic Policy (1945 to 1990), these banks served as both bonding and bridging social capital within and outside the Chinese community. With strong government support for indigenous capital, Chinese banks relied on developing political and business relationships to maintain control and ensure survival. Finally, from the implement of new National Development Policy to the early 21st century (1991 to 2010), these banks acted as bridging social capital between the Chinese community and China. As the year of 1998, due to the government`s promotion of domestic bank consolidation, only two Chinese banks, Public Bank and Hong Leong Bank, survived after the major mergers and expanded regionally. The research will be conducted from the perspectives of bonding social capital and bridging social capital, which will be divided into three periods: the pre-war British colonial period, the post-war economic recovery to the era of the New Economic Policy and the National Development Policy up to the early 21st century. The objective of the article is to analyze the influencing factors on the development of Ethnic Chinese banks in Malaysia. The article will explore the driving factors behind the evolution of Ethnic Chinese banks in Malaysia over more than a century, transition from traditional financial institutions as remittance houses to modern Chinese banks. This article points out that the development of Ethnic Chinese banks in West Malaysia has gone through the three stages as following: Firstly, during the pre-war British colonial period (before 1945), these banks functioned as bonding social capital within the Chinese community. Chinese immigrants established these banks and other ethnic financial institutions for entrepreneurial and livelihood purposes, relying on the spirit of mutual assistance within their ethnic group. Secondly, during the post-war economic recovery until the era of the New Economic Policy (1945 to 1990), these banks served as both bonding and bridging social capital within and outside the Chinese community. With strong government support for indigenous capital, Chinese banks relied on developing political and business relationships to maintain control and ensure survival. Finally, from the implement of new National Development Policy to the early 21st century (1991 to 2010), these banks acted as bridging social capital between the Chinese community and China. As the year of 1998, due to the government`s promotion of domestic bank consolidation, only two Chinese banks, Public Bank and Hong Leong Bank, survived after the major mergers and expanded regionally.
