The maladjustment during the elderly phase can influence the self-worth, as well as the physical and mental well-being of older individuals. Thus, enhancing the longevity and quality of life for the elderly has become a global priority. In response to the challenges posed by aging, governments have established community care centers and implemented health-promotion activities for the elderly, with the aim of delaying the aging process and enhancing overall health and vitality. While prior research has predominantly explored self-worth in the context of children and adolescents, studies focusing on older adults` participation in community care center activities have primarily revolved around discussions on the quality of life. Accordingly, this study aimed to investigate the effects of elderly participation in health-promotion activities on self-worth and self-rated health. The research findings are intended to provide insights for relevant organizations engaged in the establishment and operation of community care centers.
This study employed a questionnaire survey method to investigate individuals aged 65 and above who participated in health promotion activities at community care centers in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan. The research focused on stratifying the centers in Kaohsiung City into three regions: North, Central, and South. Subsequently, a purposive sampling approach was utilized to select four centers from each of the aforementioned regions for the survey. Ultimately, a total of 386 valid responses were collected and analyzed.
Statistical methods, including "descriptive statistics," "independent samples t-test," "one-way analysis of variance (One-way ANOVA)," and "multiple regression analysis," were employed using the SPSS software. The primary findings of the study are outlined below:
1.The average self-worth score for the elderly participants was 35.40, indicating an above-average level, while the average self-rated health score was 15.01, indicating a moderately high level.
2.Significant differences were observed in the self-worth among the elderly based on factors such as "age," "marital status," "monthly disposable income," and "living arrangement." However, no significant differences were found in self-worth among the elderly based on "gender" and "educational level."
3.Significant differences were found in the self-rated health status of the elderly based on factors such as "age," "educational level," "marital status," "monthly disposable income," and "living arrangement." However, "gender" did not exhibit a significant difference in the self-rated health status among the elderly.
4.Significant differences were observed in the self-worth among the elderly based on factors such as "participation frequency," "participation duration," and "diversity of participation courses." Higher weekly participation frequency, longer participation duration, and engagement in a more diverse range of courses positively influenced the self-worth of the elderly.
5.Significant differences were found in the self-rated health status among the elderly based on factors such as "participation frequency" and "diversity of participation courses." Higher weekly participation frequency and engagement in a more diverse range of courses positively influenced the self-rated health scores of the elderly. However, "participation duration" did not exhibit a significant difference in the self-rated health status among the elderly.
6.The prediction of self-worth based on demographic variables and health promotion participation among the elderly yielded an explanatory power of 20.3%. Among these factors, "educational level," "marital status," "living arrangement," "participation frequency," and "diversity of participation courses" emerged as significant predictors of self-worth among the elderly. Married individuals exhibited lower self-worth compared to those who were unmarried. Higher educational attainment was associated with higher self-worth. Living arrangement was identified as a factor contributing to higher self-worth among those living with family members, in contrast to those living alone. Moreover, greater participation frequency and involvement in a wider variety of courses were positively associated with higher self-worth.
7.The prediction of self-rated health among the elderly based on sociodemographic variables and health promotion participation yielded an explanatory power of 16.8%. Among these factors, "age," "living arrangement," and "diversity of participation courses" emerged as significant predictors of self-rated health among the elderly. Older age was associated with poorer self-rated health among the elderly. Living arrangements involving cohabitation with family members were associated with better self-rated health compared to living alone. Moreover, greater diversity in participation courses was linked to better self-rated health status.

dc.description.abstract (摘要) The maladjustment during the elderly phase can influence the self-worth, as well as the physical and mental well-being of older individuals.
