By the increases of life expectancy and decreases of fertility, the family structures have change from pyramids into beanpoles. In a beanpole family structure, the shape is long and thin, with more family generations alive but with fewer members in each generations. This means that there are longer years of shared lives across generations. Such a phenomenon of co-survivorship between generations has significant implications for family social support. Since the relations across generations are becoming increasingly important to individuals and families, the multigenerational bonds will not only enhance but in some cases replace nuclear family functions. (Bengtson, 2001) The existing literature about the effects of demographic transition on the family structure in Taiwan usually focuses on the types and sizes of households. This study applies the demographic microsimulation approach to analyze the timing of family role transitions. Based on empirical data derived from the vital statistics, we simulate the life-courses of family role relations for different birth cohorts. With the simulated results, we can estimate the timing of family role transitions. The final results show the summary statistics for family life cycles.
