Shen-hui and the Subject of Action in Emptiness

摘要 本文從「行事性言說」和「形上學言說」,「敘事性言說」和「論證性言說」的區分開始,指出禪文獻中這些言說類型彼此不同,交疊互映。以神會禪文獻的解讀為案例,藉由言說分析和敘事分析的途徑,重新檢視一些代表性的思想史解讀(呂澂、印順)和哲學解讀(牟宗三),不得不屈從於解讀者的特定立場,也致使詮釋活動不能發揮解放的功能,不能如實開顯文本的豐饒意義,反而將生動活潑的行動世界和意義世界化約為史學或形上學。 就神會禪而言,本文發現許多擬似形上學的命題都有其行事性和敘事性的語境,不能單獨抽出予以演繹。禪的行事性和敘事性語境就是行動的語境。準此,最令人關心的神會「如來(藏)禪」性格問題,也就是神會禪是否屬於如來藏自性清淨心的系統,甚至於其如來藏自性清淨的概念是否為超越性主體的問題,若重新置回其行事性和敘事性的語境,我們就會發現所謂「超越的主體性」就是「空的主體」,也就是行動的主體。
     Being discontent with modern Ch’an historiography and philosophical interpretations, in which Shen-hui (688-762) has always been pictured either as a revolutionary evangelist or as a transcendental idealist, this article attempts to rewrite Shen-hui’s Ch’an discourse by way of contextualizing metaphysics within the narrative. In light of the hermeneutics of action (Paul Ricoeur) and the philosophy of speech-act (J. L. Austin), this article refigures Shen-hui as a subject of action in emptiness. The subject of action is no longer metaphysically grounded in the transcendental mind. With the reference to the diamond Sutra, the mind rather abides in emptiness that can be disclosed through the analysis of narrative.
