According to Lee, Pratto, & Li (in press), Taiwanese participants』 support of benevolent sexism predicted their sex-discriminatory behavior more than their support of hostile sexism. Conversely, American participants』 support of hostile sexism predicted their sex-discriminatory behavior more than their support of benevolent sexism. This proposal explores what may account for the observed cultural difference. In Taiwan where Confucianism is a central ideology, social hierarchy is promoted with the aim to increase harmony. Thus, it is possible that when considering the need for social hierarchy, Taiwanese participants believe that it is for the good of the people in that dominants (e.g., men) are expected to take care of the subordinates (e.g., women). In other words, social hierarchy is a way to gain harmony that benefits people who dominate (dominants) and those who are dominated (subordinates). In America where meritocracy is valued, social hierarchy is assumed to be a natural result of differential merits. That is, social hierarchy is resulted from people』s efforts and abilities. To examine these hypotheses, four studies over a time span of 2 years are proposed. In the first year Study I, scales such as ambivalent sexism inventory, social dominance orientation scale, interpersonal hierarchicality scale, and American acculturation scale, will be collected before participants are asked to allocate limited resources for male and female groups. Among Americanized Taiwanese participants who are primed with American magazines, their support of hostile sexism is expected to predict their sex-discriminatory behavior. Among traditional Taiwanese participants who are primed with Taiwanese magazines, their support of benevolent sexism is believed to predict their sex-discriminatory behavior. In the first year study II, Taiwanese participants who have resided in the U.S. for at least 6 months will be recruited to be primed with traditional Taiwanese figures or traditional American figures before they are asked to do the same allocation task as in the first year study I. Scales in the first year study I will also be collected. In the second year study I, participants of similar background as in the first year study II will be primed with Taiwanese interdependency or American independency scenarios before they are asked to do the same allocation task as in the previous two studies. Scales in the first year study I will also be administered. In the second year study II, participants of similar background as in previous studies will be primed with Taiwanese interdependency or American independency scenarios before they are asked to allocate limited resources for different ethnic groups. Scales such as a scale about hostile and benevolent discriminatory beliefs, social dominance orientation scale, interpersonal hierarchicality scale, and American acculturation scale will be administered. In the conditions where participants are primed with traditional Taiwanese figures or Taiwanese interdependency scenarios, support of benevolent beliefs is hypothesized to predict their discriminatory behavior. In the conditions where participants are primed with traditional American figures or American interdependency scenarios, support of hostile beliefs is hypothesized to predict their discriminatory behavior.
