摘要 Choosing appropriate materials and various teaching techniques are of the utmost importance in online learning, where many sources of distraction may exist in a student’s environment. This study aims to examine the learning effectiveness of an online English reading course with particular materials and teaching techniques for Korean adult learners. The overall findings of the study based on a questionnaire showed that the selection of appropriate text materials and the use of effective teaching techniques served to inspire and motivate students in a significant way, which in turn contributed to the improvement of their reading skills. The results indicate that the journal articles for counseling and advice on ethical issues featured in the columns of “Dear Abby” and “The Ethicist” can serve as alternative texts in EFL reading classes for adult learners. Various teaching techniques utilized online can also help motivate students to stay in class and take a greater interest in their learning. To conclude, pedagogical suggestions for L2 online reading will be discussed.
