dc.description.abstract (摘要) | The main economic activity in Nicaragua is the agriculture, the fertile soil and the tropical weather of Nicaragua favor the production of many varieties of fruits. According to the Nicaraguan Institute of Agricultural Technology, Nicaragua has 58,000 acres of tropical fruit cultivation. The crops of this product are in the hands of small farmers who don’t have the required technology to add value to the fruits and export them, therefore they are limited to sale only in the local market. This situation generates a low income for farmers and many times waste of fruits due to their low shelf life. There are many methods for fruit preservation, but the drying process is the most common method of food preservation because it increases storage life. This process needs thermal energy. However, “Soul & Sun” aims to become a dried fruit processing company with a sustainable approach by harnessing solar energy, promoting organic cultivation and paying better prices to farmers, which means higher income for them and therefore a better quality of life.Having analyzed international trade statistics of dried fruits, a high and increasing demand was identified, not only in the traditional markets but also in the organic food market. The fact that the United States is the main importer of dried fruit worldwide represents an opportunity for this project since the US is Nicaragua’s largest trading partner. Additionally, the Free Trade Agreement between both countries benefits dried fruit exportation from Nicaragua due to it is tax exempted to enter the US market. In order to evaluate the feasibility of the project, a market study was carried out with secondary information to analyze the demand and supply of dried fruit, distribution channels, and pricing strategies. Also, a technical study was done to determine the adequate machinery and equipment, raw material needs and quality control requirements. Through the financial study, it was concluded that the project is profitable since the first year of operation. | en_US |
