This thesis aims to compare Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel Through the Looking-Glass (hereafter the Alice books) with their adaptation, Alice: Madness Returns by American James McGee, with a focus on the transformation of the concept of sense. While many outstanding scholars have discussed the differences between the Alice books and Alice: Madness Returns, few have addressed the notion of sense, particularly through the lens of an Oriental perspective. By tracing the shifts of the Alice books from the nineteenth century to their twenty-first-century reimaginings, this study aims to explore how they have been rewritten into contemporary versions, reflecting the cultural issues underlying such changes. This thesis is divided into three chapters: Chapter One, “The Metamorphosis of Wonderland”, focuses on the narrative background, setting, and minor characters, analysing the roles and functions that sense plays in the two works. Chapter Two, “Who Are You? Exploring the Alices’ Figures and Characteristics”, examines the differences in Alice’s images, exploring the struggles and tensions faced by each young generation. Chapter Three, “Alice in the Mysterious East Land”, centres on Eastern cultural influences, investigating how Alice: Madness Returns subverts the original framework to reimagine the Alice books as a twenty-first-century Asian version. Ultimately, this thesis argues that the transition from the Alice books to Alice: Madness Returns represents a shift in the meaning of sense, through which the narrative’s purpose moves from encouraging the young to resist rigid common sense to guiding them towards taking care of their own sense.

zh_TW
