This thesis explores moral decisions in Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre and Anne Brontë’s The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, highlighting how both novels depict moral autonomy and moral action as deeply personal processes guided by personal conscience rather than societal expectations. I argue that the Brontë sisters challenge Victorian notions of morality through their nuanced portrayals of forgiveness and moral deliberation. Guided by Kantian moral philosophy, particularly the categorical imperative, the study shows that Jane Eyre and Helen Huntingdon make rational, self-governed decisions rooted in principled moral reasoning, despite intense emotional and social pressures. Critiquing existing scholarship that interprets the protagonists’ moral choices as retreats into traditional Victorian ideals, this thesis instead emphasizes that their actions reflect deliberate moral reasoning grounded in personal conscience.
