| zh_TW |
| dc.description.abstract (摘要) | This MA thesis examines why, in Matthew Lewis’s novel The Monk, a vow is a medium of conveying horror and terror. There are two types of vow in the novel: the religious vow of celibacy and the secular vow of marriage. I argue that these vows are the source of fear for characters in the novel because they either intensify or suppress their desire.
My thesis comprises three chapters. The first chapter is about how a celibacy vow both suppresses Ambrosio’s desire and enables him to build interpersonal relationships with Agnes. The vow of celibacy is the catalyst that causes Ambrosio’s depravity and exposes his greedy nature. In the second chapter, through the examples of Agnes and the Bleeding Nun, I demonstrate how the marriage vow is implicated in the production of fear in The Monk. Both of them crave stability and support from marriage. However, their yearning for constant love gets them into imprisonment and murder. Lastly, the third chapter is going to elaborate on the troubles and fears that Raymond's misplaced marriage vow brings to his lover, Agnes, and himself.
This thesis aims to analyze fear in The Monk through the unique perspective of vows. Although there are numerous familiar ways of generating horror and terror in Gothic fiction, such as describing a ghost, a dungeon or a murder, Lewis is not satisfied with recycling those established conventions. Instead, Lewis chooses an alternative method of creating fear: taking or breaking a vow. In so doing, Lewis suggests that the source of fear lies in controversial interpersonal connections. | en_US |
